i would say that this is one investment bubble that will not explode in your face, and burn down your house, killing your wife and kids.

It seems they have 99 problems, and a red balloon is every one.

Being the resident helium balloon expert on this site, let me attack this article...

It's a bad situation, but not as dire as it sounds. Helium is produced as a byproduct of natural gas processing. There is still quite a bit of natural gas left. At some point, helium will either become rare enough, or governments will become farsighted enough, to start stockpiling it for scientific purposes. Admittedly, it is still a waste, but less than 2% of the world's supply is used for these type of recreational uses.

Also, it's not like these research facilities are great at saving gas. A research department in my city goes through 14kg of liquid helium per week. They don't consider recycling a cost-viable strategy, so the gas just evaporates. Yes, we're running out of helium - simply because it's a limited resource. But as soon as helium becomes really rare, it'll also be expensive enough to warrant recycling and to make helium balloons unattractive.

The real title should be: "Brilliant physicist doesn't check to see if he has the reagents for his experiment before turning on $30,000 a day neutron beam

This does make me a bit sad that children in the future won't know the fun of making your voice all high via birthday balloons.
