I know it's only one episode, but that just didn't feel right.

felt very right to me. i really enjoyed it, especially ed helms. i've thought he was the highlight of the series now for a few years, so i'm happy to see him get the spotlight.

I feel like Andy as manger works. Atleast better than any one else would have. Andy and Michael have similar qualities, IMHO.

I think that might be my problem. I don't want it to be Michael-lite and full of watered-down retreads of episodes past. I was hoping they'd take this opportunity to jolt something different into the mix. Robert California is a good start, but he's not going to be around every episode, right?

I dunno. I'm not writing it off just yet, but this first episode isn't nudging me toward optimism for the show improving here on out.

i'm still of the opinion that michael scott was not the best thing on the show. never was. he was the best thing in some episodes, but not in all or even most of the episodes.

so him being gone doens't matter much to me. i laugh more at erin, jim, andy, dwight, and darrell. and even ryan.

Jim and Pam are the only human beings left on the show.

Drew, you are very much in the minority for thinking Michael wasn't the best part. He almost always elevated the material even when it was shitty. Though that's mostly just Carell.

things like michael driving into a lake, or michael kidnapping a pizza boy, or prison mike... these did not elevate the material. the more cartoony michael got, the less i liked the show.

i think michael elevated the show b/c steve carell is twice the actor any of the others are. the guy is unbelievable.

i thought it was really funny when he drove into the lake btw.

My statement was more Carell-centric. He gave a very nuanced performance. Helms has yet to show me more than "glib dweeb".

I think Helms deserves a lot more credit than that. He was hilarious in the episode where he started questioning his own sexuality because of a rumor Michael started. But yeah he's not Carell-good, and I'm sure his stint as manager is short-lived.

it's not about what's better or worse it's about what i like more.

With Michael, especially early on, the show was mostly about how everyone else in the office dealt with their boss being a socially clueless but well-meaning jerk. As they grew more accustomed to Michael's behavior, he quit having to try so hard and became more human.

Since Andy is well-liked by everyone, there won't be as much tension there, which is basically the entire foundation for the show. Robert California is a possible fountain great storylines/scenes/jokes, but I'm not sure how often he'll be on the show.

My thoughts aren't fully formed here. I'm just typing out loud here as I think.

I can agree with that, with the biggest example being Kevin. They've completely betrayed the joke of Holly thinking he was retarded by actually make him retarded.

i've just been talking shit in this thread so far, so i should say i do still get enjoyment out of the show. i haven't really been excited about in a few seasons, but it's pretty consistently entertaining.

i was thinking that too. he and jim, while clearly approached differently, both have the nice-guy side character syndrome like the parts robert cummings and ralph bellamy always played in old hollywood movies. they're both funny but i tend to wish they had a bit more LIFE.
