Seriously, I'm going to start hitting them.

Which, by the by, is still very legal to do in Korea.

Children are innocent
teenaged are fucked up in the head

The day after his death, souvenir tops with "I was at Glasto 09 when Jacko died" printed on them were already on sale around the site. In fact, when Jacko died, I was at home playing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on a Nintendo DSi. I am 38 years old.

I'm to the point where I like my job, but this one class of kids I have every friday just won't shut up. And now I've found that hitting them does little, since all the teachers do that anyway, and the best way to get control of them is through shame and acting disappointed in them, which truthfully, I am.

So I think that's the next plan of action.

Shame really seems to work in that part of the world. Tell them if they don't pay attention it will bring great dishonour to your family.

I'm trying to think of a way to shoehorn the Korea or English into 'Curb your Enthusiasm' but it won't work

so can you smack them in the back of the head or is it a cane or something? How clearly defined is "hitting"?

Well, I have done it a few times, but nothing hard, just a small smack on the back of the head with my hand. However, every teacher has what they call a "love stick." Penis jokes aside, it's anything from part of a broom handle to a piece of bamboo to a broken flute that they use to hit the kids lighter if they're not paying attention. Sometimes they hit them with it in the butt (guy teachers to girls even, yet no lawsuit is filed, nor does anyone seem to think it's creepy). Sometimes they have to stick their hands out to be hit. Sometimes on the head or something. They change it up a bit. You know, trying to keep the system fresh.

And apparently, a teacher has to earn his/her "love stick" but I'm not sure how. So hopefully I'll earn mine sometime in the next year.

And for the record, I have never and will never hit any of the girls. The other Korean teachers do, but I just can't even though it's accepted. I don't mind hitting the guys though. They have laughed the few times I've done it anyway.

Um.. this is pretty fucked up, imo. You can't just... refuse to hit them?

what if the girls really pissed you off?
and kept on chatting
and chatting, and chatting, and you say 'okay girls, who wants to learn some english?' and they just ignore you, and keep on chatting away in korean, and then you yell, and they giggle and smile, but they keep on chatting, which really gets you mad. Then all of a sudden you snap, and you lose your shit and you scream at them till your face turns red, and you storm out and slam the door and lose your job and you have to go back to the usa, and it could have all been avoided if you hit the little girl, and they would have respected you. But now you are back in the USA.

what are you going to do now?
a)drink too much
b) dorg too much?

This "the best way to get control of them is through shame and acting disappointed in them" and "Oh god, I couldn't watch that" made me think of awkward situations that are hard to watch, which made me think of Curb.

Larry David makes the pilgrimage to Jerusalem and along the way gets into a crazy mix-up where he is accused of stealing when he wasn't really stealing and has his hands chopped off! Comedy gold!

although i should say i find his show to be very funny and i don't KNOW that he's a creeper, he just strikes me that way.

the fact that supercreep woody allen cast him in the role that would probably normally have gone to woody doesn't really help.

it's amazing how different cultures are. here - a light tap with a bamboo stick = a lawsuit. there - a light tap with a bamboo stick = shame to the child and his family.

This is where teaching methods and child psych come in really handy. Do you have any classes on that stuff?

You'll find you can change at least the majority of the poor behaviors you do not want to see by doing some simple things
1) Put a lot of thought into the physical arrangement of the room and where the kids are seated. The worst classrooms and the worst teachers frequently don't put any thought into this. always play four corners with the worst kids and then pair them up with kids I know will ignore their inappropriate behaviors.
2) Clearly defined expectations, rewards, consequences work with any kid. Kids will push you if these things aren't clear and will be able to have an excuse.
3) Set the bar high for behavioral expectation and hammer them on it until they toe the line. you can always improve class climate later. i had a really successful year by doing this with my classes. they were actually sad on the last day of school, and formed these great little communities within the school. i was really proud of them.
4) offer very specific praise for kids doing things that are right. something as simple as "I liked the way you did..." or "That's a great idea" or "thanks you ____ for sitting so quietly and paying attention. That makes me feel like what I'm saying is important" has a great affect.

Try those little things. I don't know what kinds of rules you have to operate under or the language barrier, but I do know these are pretty universal with kids of any culture that I've encountered.
