The last time I purchased stuff like this was early January with some gift cards. I buyed:

Pavement, Brighten the Corners Nicene Creedence Edition
Child of God by Cormac McCarthy
The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian by Robert E. Howard
Pineapple Express DVD 2-disc

MV, I highly recommend No Country if you liked the movie. The movie is VERY close to the book except there are a couple differences and it explains a couple things a little further.

I picked up the Black Kids because I remember Mofo posting about it being solid. I knew some folks on here liked Shiny Toy Guns too.

I kinda liked Ray L's other disc so I figured what the heck.

For Common, I was never sure where to start. I've always had some respect for him and liked what I heard, but never enough to purchase anything. I figured $5 was a deal and made it my first disc of his (the pickins were mighty slim as you can imagine) and I dig it so far.

Gotta take some time on all of them though. It'll take a few listens to each to really make up my mind. Right now the Black Kids and Shiny Toy Guns each sound like the Killers to me.

It's not that great of an album. They got better throughout their existence as a band. I like Carlotta Valdez, and maybe a couple others. King James Version is the shit, though. Great record.

iawtp. i love booker t's influence on the album. in the liner notes on the reissue it talks about how he was in malibu and he was staying at the same place as willie, and they began jamming together on guitar and then made the record. It's great. Interesting.

I bought

Gomez - A New Tide
Super Furry Animals - Love Kraft
Laura Marling - Alas I cannot swim
Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs
Beck Modern Guilt

I'd not done any major CD shopping in AGES, so it felt great!

Verdict?

Gomez is growing on me slowly, but it's a bit of a letdown.
The last album was less experimental than anything they've done in the past, but made up for it with catchy, well crafted pop songs, and once I'd gotten over the initial shock of it's straightforwardness, I became a big fan of the album.
This one is like that, but without the well crafted pop hooks.
It's actually a bit experimental, production wise, but in a very subtle way for the most part.
Gomez and subtle aren't an obvious recipe.
I'll still have to give it a few more listens, but for now:
6.5/10

Modern Guilt is great.
More accessible than the Information (by far) and less contrived than Guero. In places sounds like a really twisted cousin of Mutations.
8/10

Laura Marling however is the real surprise.
She is AMAZING. I don't know if anyone's already a fan on here, but I'd recommend pretty much anyone check her out.
Amazing voice (like a softer, English Fiona Apple), good guitar playing, great sense of melody, intelligent and heartfelt lyrics (and I'm not normally much of a lyrics guy).
Best album I've heard in the past 12 months, probably.
9/10

Angeline Fishguarde, your actions will be dealt with in good time, you mark my words!

^I've got Laura Marling's album, I sort of love it. It's a great record.

I'm a well wisher, in that I don't wish you any specific harm.
