Yeah that guy was an idiot. Notice that he just liked the more energetic songs. He disliked every slower song on the album. He even said that "BFF is all about high energy, high performance music." He had figured out the entire nature of the band with one record. Hate to see how this numbnuts felt about TUBORM.

Ben Folds will always be the guy who got me into music,

Nikki, I am in the same boat. If it weren't for riding around in a car, being hyper after a soccer practice over seven years ago, listening to Song for the Dumped, I wouldn't know if I would be as much into music as I am right now. Ben Folds (Well, to be fair to Darren and Robert)...Ben Folds Five got me into music hardcore.

And Ill, you wear those pants well, my friend.

Where is Drew through all of this?

I will say that Folds was the starting point(er) for me getting into music as well. Reinhold Messner was my first exposure to him in high school and I listened the hell out of that CD. I had a pretty limited knowledge of music then (I liked Sublime and Red Hot Chili Peppers) and didn't really start getting into music until about three years later. I started with the few CDs I listened to in high school and that led me to the rest of the five's stuff and eventually RTS.

Now I have a collection of over 11,000 songs that range from all sorts of bands. I haven't listened to Ben Folds or Ben Folds five in a while, however Reinholds Messner is still one of my favorite albums.

Now I'm over in Iraq and it's my music and movie collection that fills my spare time. My most prized positions are my external hard drive and iPod. It wouldn't be like that without Ben. Thanks bro.

Though that's quite a retarded pun, it made me smile for whatever reason. I picture you saying it with a sly smile and an eyebrow flash.

This entire thing is both hilarious and pretty radcore to me. I respect that one, a musician takes the time to respond to a thread on a message board that, at least in part, address what many believe are his faults or failing as a musician and two, I love that Illip took the the time to make a lot of the haters at least seem somewhat redeemable in the eyes of the dude they spend time hating (at least faux-hatred, anyway).

That being said, this all sort of has a censorship feeling about it to me. I love Ben and always have, and have been one of those sad defenders around the place for a while, but I'd hate to see a lot of the funny, honest and tounge-in-cheek takes on this Faux-Ben that's been created around here all go away because it's offended him. I mean, it's the Internet. I realise that Ben isn't Paris Hilton levels of famous, and has more time to read and respond to fans on the Internet (and obviously isn't as frightening), but if someone chooses to make records and be in the public eye, their actions and artist output are open to all kinds of criticisim, even mockery and hatred. If every actor, musician and generally famous jerk with kids got shirty with the various Internet websites, message boards and statements made about them, there'd be no Internet left... It'd just be somewhat famous people posting retorts to others on a regular basis, and not getting actual work done.

I'd never spend a lot of my time posting comments that would offend a performer in any way (mostly because I think that taking the time to be a jerk online is about as pointless as jerking off to pictures of groceries in a supermarket catalouge), but I will defend other people's right to do so, even if the musician I particularly love (and believe me, Benjamin, I think you're a fucking stellar dude) doesn't like it.

Anyway, I'm going to eat Butter Chicken and watch me some Freaks and Geeks. I just wanted to say that, y'know... Getting pissy about an Internet message board and Internet-based bitching about you and your personal/professional life is, in 2008, expected. Either deal with it, or stop being famous. Freedom of speech and expression is a good thing, y'know.

Dear Ben,

I don't hate you and I don't think you suck.

I just miss the power and energy of Ben Folds Five.

In fact, I owe you and Robert and Darren a debt of gratitude.
You see, as an old geezer, I found that I was being exposed to less and less new music. I didn't want to end up in the same rut as most of my friends who listened to nothing but 'Classic Rock' for the rest of their lives.

As my kids got older we began to share music with each other.
I'd share my dusty old albums with them and they would share their new CDs with me.
My daughter pulled out her BFF CDs and after hearing "Battle of Who Could Care Less" and "Underground" and I was hooked for good!

Ben Folds Five not only provided me with several of my all time favorite albums, they also renewed my interest in new music in general.
Now it is 10 or 12 years later, and I am again in danger of living in the past with my decade old BFF discs.

Don't let that happen!
Help and old guy out and effing ROCK again!

With lots of respect and purely platonic man hugs,
Uncle Noah

Wow, now that Ben posted here, I take back all of the bad things I said about his music.

Just kidding. Do whatever the hell you want that makes you happy, I'm not a selfish fan, although I hate your new stuff. You provided me with some of the greatest music I've heard, and two of the best concerts I've ever been to, so that's nice. And you're fan friendly. Good job, Ben.

iawtp. I don't have much else to say besides I still like Ben's music, and even though I join in the abuse it's all in good fun.

I think we say a lot of this stuff because we know Ben can take it.

Can you imagine if this stuff was said on like the John Mayer fan site? The bitch would cry.

most of the dry jokes i make come from the fact that i figure ben's a relatively sharp guy who can understand that it's not personal. i listen to silverman from time to time. not a huge fan, but i wouldn't say it merits hate. there are still times when ben can make me consistently laugh and create good music. i don't actually have anything against ben or bill murray. it's all in good fun. we're on the internet.

SHOCKING

CD took all of what I wanted to say. I appreciate Ben coming on the site and whatnot, but it doesn't change my opinions of SFS and/or the EPs, and especially RAC.

We'll see when Way To Normal hits the shelves.

If this post came from someone with more than 5000 posts, the perhaps you'd have the authority to demand it. But your 12 posts don't really give you merit. Sorry.

I have the new CD and have had it for three years now. I'm not sharing with you.

I just read the suburbs thread where they critique us. They sound like a bunch of fucking 12-steppers who are going through rehab or something and want to be really supportive of eachother and folds. Really sickening shit that they actually believe themselves. I picture a giant circle jerk with everyone smiling really creepily. at least here its interesting, that site blows chunks.

Anyone remember how the .com used to be back in the RTS years? I remember that and the dorg being friends.

I remember us flaming the regulars on the Com for being elitist assholes... and now the suburbs looks the same way at us now. The .com had very few regulars though (I only remembered about 3) while we have at least 30 main posters and lots of minor posters.

However, I've noticed we haven't had a new member become a regular poster in some time.

to be fair, the .com had a vibrant community for a few years and was destroyed by at least four format changes,( some requiring reregistration) and the introduction of restrictive modding. a lot of us older .commers weren't welcome anymore

I can't believe that the fanclub and deluxe sets being released haven't been mentioned. Those two travesties were also a nail in the BF coffin for me.

That first page with the update by "allison" on thesuburbs is a bit silly imo. It's not really news or anything. It's just messageboard talk!!
