There has been a huge push for servers in the resturant business to get an automatic 20% gratuity to every check. Kinda just wanted to know what you think.
Im also doing a study on people who have been servers, bartenders, and food delivery people. If you guys could help me out and do a quick survey for me... itll only take like a minute, it would really help me out. Thank

gratuity should not be mandatory. if that's the case, just remove the whole system and pay them minimum wage.

i agree, i think its pretty damn stupid. tips are for people who give you good service, and what happens if a waiter or waitress gives you lousy service?

then they're suckers for having a crappy job.

A server has to be really really crappy for me not to give them a good tip. Mandatory tips are dumbuh

when i delivered for kfc they paid my gas and then some.

yeah i got bored. i realized it bended back pretty far, but it was too hard. then i gave it a few seconds and thought about a bear attack or some shit, and then i pushed it behind my balls and i put it in my butt. i can get about 1/4 inch into there

I agree with Drew on this. Gratuity is there to express appreciation for good service.

Besides, 15% is standard service. 20% is for better service.

This is from the vantage point of someone who never worked for tips.

from someone who has worked for tips i usually double the tax and then add some to that.

im not good with percentages so that's how i do it.

i believe these days 20% is standard.

I'm still weirded out that KFC delivers. Though, I dont know why.

I would take your survey but I have been lucky enough to never have to serve or deliver.

I find that to be the exception, not the rule.

That's true, too, but since the tipping system is designed so that your employer has to bring you up to par with minimum wage if you're lacking, I can't say I'm feeling a lot of sympathy.

I worked a minimum wage job once without tips. I think a few times, customers offered to buy me a drink, because the AC was usually broken and I was usually running around non-stop. So, again, not a lot of sympathy here.

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

Yeah, but you can't do that in all states cause taxes differ and what not.

Tax here is 8.whatever% so doubling is also what I usually do.

Also, I was going to make a Mr. Pink reference but now I can't.

Tax here is 8 too. But just doubling it doesn't seem like enough for me so I'll add some to that.

Yeah, thanks for recognizing the quote SW. It fit in perfectly in this situation. Webb just thinks I'm an asshole.

I was curious as to the standard now. Wikipedia has an extensive page on it. The States listing says, "While opinions vary, Fodor's suggests that tipping wait staff 15% of the bill (before tax) is considered standard, or up to 20% at more expensive establishments."

I didn't follow the link to see who Fodor is.

go suck my pole?

cmon, grant is not the world's greatest nor is he the world's cutest. such a statement is an insult to tom arnold and chris stone small, respectively.

and i agree, he has TWO MANY OPINONS. worst of all, he disagrees with ME at least 60% of the time (that's a conservative estimate, huh grant?), AND EVEN WORSE he frames his argument in such a manner as to make it logical, significant, and persuasive. yeah that's right he does something WORSE THAN THE WORST. there is no worser than grant. While we're on the subject, I'd like to see how you guys feel about tipping to go orders. I usually throw them a buck or two for a $7 - $10 check. I don't really think it's a big deal, but really, does someone deserve a tip because they're handing you your food? Why not start tipping fast food employees? To reiterate, I almost always do (unless they took forever and didn't have an excuse, or were rude, or both), but it still seems kind of strange.

That being said, we do get tips at Starbucks, and it's almost the same thing as to go services, however the difference is we are preparing and serving the product: we make the drinks and sometimes warm the pastries (not in my store though!), and the vast majority of Starbucks employees I've seen do go that extra mile to provide "Legendary Service" to customers, so throwing the change from your order in the bucket is all we really ask. Most of our regulars tip us at least a buck every time they're in the store, and some of them come two to three times per day, so that makes up for the guys who get a $1.98 Grande drip and pocket the two pennies (which of course they are entitled to do, it's just shitty).
